Link Building 101

Two of the three big search engines (Google and Yahoo) place a large importance on one way links to determine rankings. Each link to your site is like a vote and the more votes you have, the higher you will rank.

In this article I will be sharing with you some important info on link building and some strategies to help your one way link building.

Before we get started, it's important to understand the fundamentals...

Beginning with the very basics, a link is a way of navigating from one webpage to another. To have a link within the same website is called an 'internal link'. An 'external link' takes you from a webpage in one website to a webpage in another website. The meaning of 'backlink' is that your site is being linked to from another website.

What Are the 4 Types of Links?

There are 4 different types of links:

* URL Link - This is simply a website url that is a link.

* Text Links (aka static links) - This is the most common type of link (when you click on a word or phrase and it is a link)

* Image Links - An image link is simply an image that you click on to navigate to another webpage.

* Dynamic Links - These types of links are in another programming language called Javascript and while they also take you from one webpage to another, they have 'extra codes' to perform special functions.

(these types of links can appear in many different forms)

Perhaps you own a café or a spa, or you build swimming pools. It's not an online business, but you have a website that describes what you have to offer. You'd like more visibility for your site, and you've had a salesperson tell you about the benefits of buying a listing on her portal site. It sounds like a good deal, but how do you know? Here are a few tips that will help you make an informed decision.

Find out what's already working for you.

The first thing to do, if you haven't done it already, is to install Google Analytics on your site. Google Analytics is free and gives you important information about what is already working on your site - for example, which sites refer visitors to your site, and which keywords your visitors are searching on. Knowing exactly how many visits you get, and what those visitors are looking at on your site provides an important baseline to improve on. And, you may find some pleasant surprises - perhaps an article about your business or a site that you didn't know existed is referring important traffic to your site.

Installing Google Analytics is easy, but if you don't edit your own site, you can ask your hosting provider or web site designer to do it. For many sites, the installation takes less than 15 minutes.

RSS and Internet Marketing

The original concept of RSS came from Netscape (way back in the day), where the intention was to provide a way for users to customise their own homepages with links to websites that were of interest specific to them, similar to bookmarking and favorites websites.

The application of RSS to internet marketing was a new and unexpected development to RSS technology developers. Since readers are given the option to add RSS feeds to their own aggregators, those who are interested in particular products and services available on the internet can now be notified real time. Marketing becomes more specific to interested people and not a hit-and-miss operation.

Medium to big-scale companies who intend to use RSS for marketing their products and services should consider linking up with email account providers, (e.g. Gmail, Yahoo, MSN); networking websites (e.g. Friendster, Multiply, MySpace); websites of newspapers and television network websites (e.g. New York Times, CNN). Smaller companies can also look at networking websites as well as personal blog websites (e.g. Blogspot) and websites of clubs and organizations that would probably make use of their products or services e.g. a fishing supplies store can look for the website of their local fishing club for possible RSS marketing.

Clearly, RSS is an innovation in worldwide web information management as well as online marketíng. We can expect better RSS technology in the not-so-distant future as its popularity increases among users and website owners alike.

Forums for your Industry

You should sign up for popular forums using your business name as your username to help build links form them. BoardTracker.com can help you find the most popular forums for your industry. Just enter your top keywords and you'll see which forums are discussing them.

Your business name will then show up on the view profile section of the forum. Try to find the most popular and high-ranking forums you possibly can to do this. That way your profile page will be more likely to show up near the top of the search results.
